Approximately 6,500 migrants are on the move from Honduras. The migrants have begun pushing through the Guatemalan border, toward their final destination, U.S.A.
Alejandra Mena, Guatemala’s immigration spokesman, told Reuters that there were approximately 6,500 Honduran migrants on the move. Thousands migrated through the border on Saturday on their way to the United States.
Mena went on to tell the news outlet that as many as 3,500 have already migrated through their border into Guatemala. A Honduran police officer said he had seen “more or less 5,000 people” walk past his checkpoint.

Undoubtedly this is due to President-elect Joe Biden’s decision to immediately ask Congress to offer legal citizenship to an estimated 11 million people in the country. According to four people briefed on his plans, Biden will announce legislation his first day in office to provide citizenship for millions of immigrants in the United States illegally.
ABC News reported, Guatemalan soldiers established a road block a few miles north of where they pushed across the border from Honduras. Guatemala is attempting to apprehend the Honduran migrants and send them back to their home country.
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei called on Honduran authorities to “contain the mass exit of its inhabitants,” ABC News reports. “The government of Guatemala regrets this violation of national sovereignty and calls on the governments of Central America to take measures to avoid putting their inhabitants at risk amid the health emergency due to the pandemic.”
The new migrant caravan reportedly began moving on Friday at about 4 a.m. from San Pedro Sula. Migrants blame this year’s hurricane and economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There’s no choice” but to leave, 25-year-old Oscar Zaldivar, a driver from Cofradia, told ABC News. “You have to leave here, this country because we’re going to die here.”
Guatemalan officials report that some of the migrants may be headed to Tecun Uman located in southern Mexico.
