(The Post Millennial) – The Chinese state has developed an AI lawyer that can prosecute minor crimes in major Chinese cities. On top of this, this robot can identify dissent and press charges, according to the Daily Mail.
Researchers claim that the AI judge can successfully identify the right sentence for a crime with 97 percent effectiveness. China already has a really high conviction rate.
This robot was built by the Shanghai Pudong People’s Procuratorate, which handles prosecution for the biggest city in China.
They have argued that this AI judge allows human prosecutors to focus on the major cases, easing up the workload while this robot only focuses on minor crimes.
This AI can be run on a normal computer. It was trained using 17,000 real life cases over the course of the past five years.
A Chinese researcher said that “The system can replace prosecutors in the decision-making process to a certain extent.”
Researchers are already working on a better version that can press multiple charges at once. On top of this, it will be able to identify even more crimes than the first version.
One lawyer from Shanghai said “the accuracy of 97 per cent may be high from a technological point of view, but there will always be a chance of a mistake.”
